VICTORIAN Terri McKinnon played the best golf of her career to beat South Australian Fiona Pike 7 and 6 in the final of the Australian women's amateur championship at Lake Karrinyup, in Perth, yesterday.
McKinnon's win gave Victoria the double, after it took the Gladys Hay interstate teams event. The last Victorian double was in 1979, when Jane Lock won one of her three national titles.
At the end of a gruelling couple of months, McKinnon, a 21-year-old from Commonwealth club, was happily tired yesterday.
She played for six weeks in Europe as part of a VIS tour, which was followed by the Rich River Classic at Echuca. Then there was a week heading the Victorian team in the interstate matches, and 36holes of qualifying strokeplay and six rounds of matchplay in the championship.
``I'm tired, but I'm really happy. It was good Fiona played well, too," said Mckinnon, who was seven under the card yesterday.
McKinnon held a two-hole lead after nine holes and led by five, at three under the card, at the lunch break after 18 holes.
